Cops advise, slap fines on vehicles parked along roadsides in Thiruvananthapuram

The drivers are also planning to take up their grievances with political leadership.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city police have launched a drive against parking of private school vans near school premises during daytime. Wedding halls are also warned against parking of buses carrying guests on roadsides. On Friday, the police have advised drivers of vans against parking of vehicles on sides of road near schools, especially Keston road near Christ Nagar school at Vellayambalam. Stickers imposing fine were also pasted on many vehicles.

Though former district collector Biju Prabhakar launched a similar initiative couple of year back, its effect lasted only for couple of weeks. Traffic police circle inspector (Thiruvan-anthapuram city - North) Mr. K Pradeep said that parking ban would be enforced on a phased manner. "From Friday onward we are advising the drivers not to park the vehciles on roads near schools during day hours. After a few days we will strictly impose fine on vehicles parked illegally. Later on the vehicles will be towed away," he said. Meanwhile, drivers lament over the lack of any alternative arrangements.

"If we leave after dropping students in the morning and return in the afternoon we won't get space to park vehicles to collect students. Hence we are parking vehicles here itself during day hours," said Sukumaran, driver of private school van parked near Christ Nagar school at Vellyambalam. The drivers are also planning to take up their grievances with political leadership. Over 50 vans are parked along the Keston road from Vellayambalam to Devaswom board junction that leads to the Cliff House compound where Chief Minister and other ministers reside. School vans parking during daytime was also rampant along General hospital - Vanchityoor stretch.

Christ Nagar higher secondary school principal Fr. Kurian Chalangady said that the credentials of many vans were also very doubtful. "Earlier, as per the advise of the police we distributed forms to all private van drivers bringing students to our school to give their personal and vehicle details. But only a few had furnished the details," he said adding that it was not practical for the school to provide parking space to all vehicles. Meanwhile, the police also warned marriage hall authorities that action would be initiated against them if vehicles carrying guests are parked on roadsides and cause traffic congestion or accidents
