Ghat road repair in 10 days
KOZHIKODE: In the next 10 days, the entire road repair works at Thamarassery Ghat Road would be completed, District Collector U.V. Jose said. In addition to this, heavy vehicles would not be allowed to ply through the Ghat road during these 10 days and big buses would also be restricted. The Collector was speaking with Government officials and people’s representatives at Thamarassery Taluk office on Tuesday to discuss the deteriorating traffic problems on Thamarassery Ghat Road and to find a feasible solution to it.
After recent and repeated accidents reported from the Ghat road leading to traffic congestions for several hours, the District Collector called for an immediate meeting with officials from the Revenue, Public Works and forest department, Taluk officials and also the members of the District-level Disaster Management Authority. The Wayanad District Collector was also part of the meeting. The Collector added that for the land acquisition in connection with the road widening project, a request letter would be sent to the forest department for permission.
The District administration also admitted its negligence in not stopping illegal parking on the Ghat road which has also turned out to be one of the major reasons for the traffic congestion. The traffic jams have been affecting transportation between Kozhikode and Wayanad due to the traffic congestion in this 12 Km-long stretch.
The officials pointed out that Christmas day was one of the worst as the traffic jam took more than 7 hours to get cleared after a lorry fell into a pit on the road.In the meeting, officials told the Collector that the repair work or the road widening project implementation would not be a solution to curb the congestion on the Ghat road. An alternative transportation route should be thought of, they said.
