Coimbatore: 1 more held in HM functionary murder

Fourth accused continues to be at large.

Coimbatore: The CB-CID (special investigation division) police have arrested one more accused from Pollachi on late on Monday, who allegedly acted as the brain behind the murder of the local Hindu Munnani (HM) spokesperson, C Sasikumar last year.

Police gave the name of the person arrested as Mohammed Mubarak (28), who was on the run for the last one year. The HM functionary was hacked to death by a gang including two motorbike-borne assailants at Suybramaniampalayam near Thudiyalur on September 22, 2016, it may be recalled.

According to the police, as a hunt was on for two to three persons for their alleged involvement in the killing, the Special Investigation Division of the CB-CID had received a tip-off, following which Mubarak was arrested.

Police said two persons were earlier arrested in connection with the killing of C Sasikumar. Mubarak, a resident of Saibaba Colony here, was produced before a court here, which remanded him to judicial custody till January 9 and lodged in Coimbatore prison, the police said.

On August 1 this year, the cops had arrested one of the accused 27-year-old Saddam Hussain from Karumathampatty, who reportedly confessed to the police that he was deployed as a motorbike driver in the eleventh hour.

The other accused arrested in connection with the case is 35-year-old Zubair of GM Nagar in South Ukkadam. Police are on the lookout for the fourth accused, 28-year-old Gani, who continues to be at large. Investigations have revealed that Mubarak, while in hiding, had been staying in Karnataka, Telangana and Kerala and selling clothes. He was doing the same at Pollachi railway station when he was nabbed on a tip-off.
