Wi-Fi on trains from next year: Suresh Prabhu
Thiruvananthapuram: Wi-Fi internet facility will be made available in 100 more railway stations and some trains during the next year, said Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu. Dedicating six passenger amenities at different locations through video conferencing from Thiruvananthapuram, Mr Prabhu said that wi-fi internet was already available at 100 stations. The aim is to have wi-fi internet facility at all railway stations in small cities and towns.
The new facilities commissioned were a women facilitation centre at Thiruvananthapuram Central station, wi-fi internet, renovated waiting room for ladies and LED information board at Kollam railway station, pay and use air-conditioned waiting room at Ernakulam Town station and escalator at Kannur station. The Union minister also welcomed the state government's decision to form a joint venture with railways to undertake development projects.
He also said that the remittances of NRKs could also be utilised for railway development. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, speaking at the function, stressed the need to enhance safety in trains. He said that some women were even hesitant to travel on trains owng to security concerns. PWD minister G. Sudhakaran, who is in charge of railways, and other senior officials were also present.
