NCSC issues notice to Pondicherry varsity
Puducherry: National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has issued a notice to the Pondicherry Central University (PCU) seeking its reply on enhancement of seats for the admission of students based on a complaint lodged by Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary A.V. Veeraraghavan.
In the notice issued to the registrar of the university, the commission pointed out that it had decided to investigate the matter submitted by Veeraraghavan.
The university has been asked to submit facts and information to the commission within 30 days. In his complaint letter, Veeraraghavan pointed out that Puducherry government had asked the university to enhance seats in the government arts and science colleges here due to the heavy rush of students.
There are a total of 2,118 seats in six government arts and science colleges in Puducherry and the government, after a meeting with principals of the colleges, asked the university to give permission to increase the intake of students by another 361.
But the university paid no heed to the request and sent a late reply turning down the request of the government. This affected the studies of several SC students in rural areas here, said Veeraraghavan.
