Kochi: The district administration on Saturday urged the traffic police to take urgent steps to ease the traffic woes in Kochi city. A high level meeting convened by Ernakulam district collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla decided to deploy more traffic wardens in the city. Collector will convene another meeting to decide whether to alter the signal system at Vyttila. The earlier introduced traffic diversion at Vyttila junction failed owing to insufficient deployment of police personnel and due to the lack of proper warning boards.
The diversion also led to the death of a person. Six accident cases were also reported after the traffic diversions were introduced. The meeting held at the collectorate resolved that people find it hard to cross the road along the Vyttila-Palarivattom stretch. Major crossings along the stretch such as Chakkarparambu, Ponnurunni, Ernakulam Medical Center and Oberon Mall near Edappally are unmanned. P.T. Thomas, MLA, asked the authorities to find a solution to end the chaos.
The meeting also discussed the possibilities of setting up a signal near Vyttila Mobility Hub. V.P. Sajeendran, MLA, opined that even the approach roads at Vyttila are also hit by frequent traffic jams. Eldhose Kunnappally, MLa, said that many buses stopped services from the KSRTC Perumbavoor depot. He added that the same is causing hardships to people of Perumbavoor. He also added that the new traffic regulations at Aluva are also becoming an issue. He claimed that the regulations are unscientific,.
Anoop Jacob, MLA. pointed to the issues at his constituency Piravom. Thrippunithura MLA M. Swaraj asked the administration to take action to end the drinking water scarcity at Thrippunithura and Udayamperur areas. Hibi Eden, MLA, asked water authority to provide water at Vaduthala, Kadavanthra, Udayaagar and Lourde Hospital areas.
