ADILABAD: Cotton farmers are looking for a good price at a critical juncture following crop damage due to rain and pest attack even as the Centre has introduced new farming Acts. Cotton has been cultivated in 4.23 lakh acres this Kharif season in Adilabad district.
The Centre announced an minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 5,825 for a quintal of cotton with eight per cent moisture content. The district authorities will purchase cotton from farmers on a mandal-wise basis in Adilabad market yard from October 29. Farmers must bring tokens issued to them along with Aadhar card and patta passbook.
Officials informed that a certain amount will be cut down from the MSP if the produce has more than eight per cent moisture.
Adilabad authorities are issuing tokens through agriculture extension offices to cotton farmers so that they can bring their produce on the scheduled day. Now, cotton farmers are looking for Union and state governments help to get a good price.
Authorities have announced that cotton produce will be purchased from the farmers of Bheempur, Mavala and Adilabad (Urban) on October 29 and Talamadugu on October 31 while for those from Tamsi it will be on November 2.
The farmers have been asked to dry their produce before bringing it to the market yard to ensure moisture content is below 12 percent for getting a good price.
Meanwhile, agriculture extension officers are spreading awareness among farmers on measures to get rid of pink bollworm, which is gradually spreading to other areas. Pink bollworm in the crop was found at Maniyarpur village in Bela mandal recently.
