Telangana: SHE Team celebrates third anniversary

20 per cent fall in crime against women since its inception in 2014.

Hyderabad: The SHE Team turned three on Thursday. About 32 per cent of the complaints are related to stalking since its inception. Though Mahender Reddy, city commissioner, claimed Hyderabad to be the safest city, atrocities against women are reported with stalking topping the list.

Mr Mahender Reddy said that SHE Team was started on October 24, 2014, to curb harassment against women. “I am glad that there is a 20 per cent reduction in offences against women in the past few years,” he said, while attending the third anniversary celebrations of the SHE Team on Thursday.

He added that a deterrence has been created as the SHE Team catches the culprits red-handed or by verifying CCTVs.

Over the past three years, the SHE Team caught 1,464 persons red-handed and addressed 3,516 cases. Nearly 44 per cent of the offenders fall in the age group of 21 to 40 years. Majority of the cases were reported by students, working professionals and housewives via Facebook, Twitter, Hawkeye app, WhatsApp and Dial 100.

Swati Lakra, additional CP and SHE Teams head, said, “After conducting many awareness and educational programmes, an increasing number of women are voluntarily coming forward to discuss their experiences with the police. Overall there is a reduction in cases related to harassment of women in public places.”
Nayani Narasimha Reddy, home minister, appreciated the Telangana police for implementing the concept of friendly-policing. He added that SHE Team has been extended to all the districts in Telangana.

Tollywood actress Lavanya Tirapathi who was also present, said, “Women should discuss their concerns with the SHE Team as they are helpful.” Around 1200 students from various colleges attended the event and they shared their experiences about the SHE Team.
