Essentials to be distributed sans Aadhaar

The state government had asked ration cardholders to link their ration cards with Aadhaar cards.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday allayed concerns of the common man by clarifying that they would continue to get essential food items from November 1 even if their Aadhaar number is not seeded to their ration cards.

Food minister R. Kamaraj said no timeframe or deadline has been set to link ration cards with Aadhaar card and that people can go to ration shops as usual to buy food items at discounted rates.

“Distribution of essential commodities would not be stopped to people who have not seeded their Aadhaar numbers with their ration cards. No deadline has been set for seeding Aadhaar numbers into ration cards. No change has been made to the existing procedure of buying products from ration shops,” Mr Kamaraj was quoted as saying in a press release issued by the government.

The statement from the minister puts at rest speculation that only those who had seeded their Aadhaar number with ration cards would be eligible to buy products from the ration shops in Tamil Nadu. The state government had asked ration cardholders to link their ration cards with Aadhaar cards.
