Nod for mining triggers protestin Thiruvananthapuram

The environmental activists allege that the clearance is being granted flouting the ban orders from the Supreme Court and the High Court.

Thiruvananthapuram: The move of the State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC) to grant environmental clearance (EC) for English Indian Clays to carry out mining activities on 2.89 hectares of land in Melthonnakkal village has triggered protests.

The environmental activists allege that the clearance is being granted flouting the ban orders from the Supreme Court and the High Court.

Environmental Protection and Research Council (EPRC) president S.J. Sanjeev alleged that the SEAC by granting clearance has put thousands of people in grave danger.

"This decision is against the right of the people to live there as mining activities will pollute groundwater," he said.

"The SEAC chairman has vested interests in granting the EC for mining against court orders."
