Operation Safety to be re-launched in Thiruvananthapuram

City police drive to check rogue drivers

Thiruvananthapuram: The city police will re-launch Operation Safety to check rogue motorists. City Police Commissioner Sparjan Kumar said that fatal accidents had dipped during the month-long Operation Safety. Around four times more traffic offences were being registered in the city. Nearly 70 motorists were caught everyday for driving while talking on the phone. The operation was stopped by Onam as the forces were redeployed to boost up security. It will be resumed after the strikes connected to the month-long assembly session.

In the run up to the next phase of Operation Safety, the police will try to get most of the 223 CCTVs in the city up and running. “Rash driving is at its worst between 6.30pm and 9.30pm as people rush back home late. A lot of drunken driving incidents are reported then. We will resume Operation Safety to tighten the leash as frequent rash driving and signal jumping of two-wheelers are being reported,” said a senior official attached to Traffic (South).

Officers have been directed to avoid risky vehicle checking like the one in Tiruvallam last week which resulted in injury to policeman and two bike riders. Annually around 150 people die in road accidents in the capital city limits and double this number in rural Thiruvananthapuram.
