Chennai: The principal sessions court has rejected the bail petition of the reigning national racing champion Vikash Anand, accused in Porsche car accident that killed a 29-year-old autorickshaw driver and injuring others, when the car went amok on Cathedral road a week ago.
Judge Dr G. Jayachandran, has also dismissed the bail petition of the co-passenger, T. Chanrankumar. The accident took place at 3 am on September 19. In the impact, 10 three-wheelers were damaged and auto drivers and inmates of the car sustained injuries. Arumugam, 29, an auto driver, succumbed to injuries.
Adayar traffic investigation wing police arrested Vikash and T. Charankumar, a co-passenger and owner of the vehicle. In his bail plea, Vikash Anand claimed he was a passenger. However, Charankumar also filed a bail petition submitting that the car belonged to him and was driven by his friend Vikash in an inebriated condition, causing the accident.
On Monday, city public prosecutor M.L. Jegan opposed the bail petitions stating that they were under the influence of alcohol when the mishap took place. They had a blood-alcohol level of 67 per cent. One person was killed and 12 autorickshaw drivers sustained injuries in the mishap. One among them is under serious condition. Properties worth Rs 20 lakh were also damaged. Jegan said Chanrankumar had instigated Vikash to drive fast.
Counsel for Vikash submitted that Vikash was a college student and was ready to pay compensation. CPP replied that the case was in the preliminary stage and prosecution required to collect more details from them. Judge Dr Jayachandran rejected both the bail petitions.
