NAAC team to start Calicut University assessment today
KOZHIKODE: The UGC’s National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) team will start their four-day visit at Calicut University from Wednesday. The nine-member team led by Madras University former vice chancellor Dr S.P Thyagarajan has already reached the University and conducted the pre-visit meeting.
It is after a gap of five years that the state’s largest university is going for NAAC assessment. In the 2010 visit, the University was awarded B grade with 2.94 points. This year, ahead of the visit, the University has made elaborate arrangements including a mock visit in March to assess the preparations for the actual visit. Addressing the press on the eve of the NAAC visit, Calicut University Vice Chancellor Dr K Mohammed Basheer said that the varsity was all set for the assessment process.
“We are looking for the ‘A ++’ grade in this year’s visit and we are confident that we can perform better. During the last five years, we have done many research oriented works and launched many unique projects like Community Disability Management Project (CDMRP) and Digital Document Filing System (DDFS). Our varsity is probably the first and only varsity which has implemented DDFS for the entire office,” he added.
During the visit, the NAAC team will visit various varsity departments and interact with students and teachers. The VC and various department heads will conduct PowerPoint presentations before the team detailing the University’s activities. The team will also visit Pareeksha Bhavan, other offices in the campus, residential areas, Library, admission directorate, Computer Centre, Botanical Garden, Madhava Observatory, Athletics stadium, guest house and various academic chairs.
The team will also visit the Institute of Tribal Studies and Research (ITSR), Chethalayam in Wayanad and assess the CDMR project of the Psychology department. The School of Drama at Thrissur will also be assessed by the peer team. The assessment is important for the University which is set to celebrate its golden jubilee of existence. The peer team will be welcomed by the staff and students of the varsity at 9 a.m.
