Mahatma Gandhi University decides to stick to old syllabus
KOCHI: The Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) has decided to implement the revised degree syllabus only from the next academic year (2017-18) and go ahead with the old syllabus in this academic year. MGU vice-chancellor Dr. Babu Sebastian told DC on Tuesday that he got the legal opinion in this regard from the university standing counsel in the High Court and decided to stick to it.
“The overall opinion in the university higher circles also is in the same direction. There are problems in the curriculum and it needs to be revised so as to rectify the anomalies. These anomalies relate to paper-wise weightage, credits and number of periods for each subject,” the VC said. “There are 134 subjects with 6,000 papers with main and complimentary papers. Any anomaly in setting periods, credits and weightage will upset the overall scheme. So we decided to have a relook,” he said.
He also said that there are no problems with syllabus and hence the revision won’t have much financial impact. “It would more be a technical process and hence won’t consume much finances,” he said. With the new members in the university Academic Council raising objections to the implementation of the new syllabus this year itself, the VC had referred the matter the other day to the standing counsel to ensure that if implemented, the same would stand legal scrutiny. MGU degree classes will begin on Wednesday with the old syllabus.
