The accused confessed to having robbed 30 couples, but only four incidents were reported, said a police officer.

Hyderabad: Enraged after his sister was cheated by a man who professed love, a 38-year-old man from Yadadri Bhongir district took to targeting young couples in isolated places on the city outskirts and robbed them by posing as a police officer.

The accused confessed to having robbed 30 couples, but only four incidents were reported, said a police officer.

Police said the accused, Chintala Chandu 38, was a habitual offender. Chandu has been living in the city from 1996 and working as a driver with private companies. Police said he couldn’t bear the suffering of his sister after she was cheated, and developed a gru-dge against couples.

In 2015 he extorted money from a couple at Hayathnagar. He was acquitted in that case.

In the last two years, four complaints of extortion from couples moving in isolated areas were reported in Rachakonda commissionerate. Police said Chandu would go up to the couples posing as a police official and threaten them with cases and extort money, gold and other valuables.

Rachakonda police commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat said, “A team of sleuths from the Central Crime Station apprehended Chandu on the service road of the Outer Ring Road near Abdullapurmet. On questioning, Chandu confessed to about 30 offences committed in the last two years, 27 in Rachakonda and three in Cyberabad commissionerate. Only 4 cases were reported.”

Based on Chandu’s confession, about 9.5 tolas of gold, `3 lakh cash and a scooter were recovered and produced before the court. Police asked the victims of Chandu to lodge a complaint, he said.
