Tamil Nadu: 80,000 students apply for RTE admission
Chennai: In just over a month, nearly 80,000 students applied to the seats reserved under Right to Education (RTE) act in private schools from all over the state.
On Friday alone, last date for applying under this quota, close to 9,000 students applied for the admissions, officials said.
Madurai district has topped among the districts in a number of RTE applications. The district has received over 6,200 applications as of Friday afternoon. It was closely followed by Chennai (4,700) and Salem (4,470) districts.
As per the act, at least 25 percent of the seats at entry level classes (LKG and class 1) in private schools need to be reserved for children who are hailing from economically and socially disadvantaged sections.
After closing the applications on Friday midnight, the officials will download the school wise applications. “The chief educational officers in each district will depute an official for each school to conduct lot system on May 31. The official will hold the lot in front of parents and the school principal,” officials said.
The children of scavengers and HIV-affected will be given preference over others. After the lot system, the schools will paste their admission list on their notice board and it will also be uploaded to the website.
To make the RTE admissions hassle free and bring more transparency, the state government had made the entire process online this year.
It also announced the number of seats available school wise under this quota. As per the announcement by the government, totally 1.26 lakhs seats are available under the RTE act in 9,000 private schools.
