Kannur: Food for thought and orphanages
KANNUR: Give a call to 9400481845 and a volunteer from Annapoorna Facebook collective will be at your doorstep. They collect your excess food and keep it in the freezer at the Holy Family Church, Kannur. The collective also receives the support of Navbharath IAS Academy and its volunteers distribute food at orphanages, hospitals and old age homes. “College students, NCC and NSS cadets are also supporting the move, especially in collection and distribution,” said organiser Jofin P. James, director of the academy. He takes nearly 400 students from his academy also as volunteers, who regularly carry fruits to be distributed in two shifts.
Nearly 30 hotels in Kannur town have been donating to the freezer after it was opened by Ports Minister Ramachandran on April 30, says Mr Jofin. Now that the marriage season is around, the auditoriums also provide food, especially from Saturdays to Monday. The food is being distributed on the premises of the railway station and old bus stand. On a daily basis, 30 to 35 lunch packets are received, he said. To keep the food safe, CCTV surveillance is in place and a generator has also been set up to keep it fresh. The public are also welcome to place food in packets in the freezer. In future, the collective is planning to distribute food in hospitals for the bystanders.
