Mahatma Gandhi University excludes 25 colleges from Centralised Allotment Process

Some syndicate members want to give affiliation to these colleges.

KOCHI: In an interesting development, the MG University has excluded 25 self-financing colleges from the Under-Graduate (UG) Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) which began on Thursday. These colleges did not meet the stipulations of the varsity in securing affiliation, including the required five acres for hosting the college and having own building.

The colleges are spread in four districts of Ernakulam, Kottayam, Idukki and Pathanamthitta and Kuttanad taluk of Alappuzha, where the university has jurisdiction. They had admitted students last year and the university procedure is to renew the affiliation each year. They include IHRD colleges controlled by government.

MGU Vice-Chancellor Dr Babu Sebastian told DC that originally there were 38 colleges that failed to meet these stipulations. “We had given showcause notice to these colleges three months ago and 13 among them satisfied the requirements on land and building as stipulated by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under its 2009 regulations by Wednesday.

These were included in the Centralised Allotment Process (CAP) which started on Thursday while others which failed to meet the requirements were excluded,” Dr Babu Sebastian said. The proceedings were initiated after the Governor asked the university to submit a report in this regard in the light of a petition he received from Kochi in this connection.

“The university had given provisional affiliation to these colleges subject to their affidavit that they will meet the requirements at a later stage. But these colleges failed to fulfil their commitment,” the VC said. University circles said that the measure has been taken to ensure standards in the self-financing sector which has been a concern in recent times.

There are reports that the strike by the Left-leaning employees’ organisations of the varsity which did not allow the last syndicate meeting culminated in denying the affiliation to these colleges. Some syndicate members want to give affiliation to these colleges.
