Congress gets code thwart LDF sapling plan

The LDF decided to dispatch them at the doorsteps of voters.

Alappuzha: District collector R. Girija on Tuesday stopped CPM candidate T.M. Thomas Isaac's jackfruit saplings distribution after protests citing the violation of the model code of conduct. District Congress chief A. A. Shukoor said the UDF had made an oral complaint to the collector the other day, besides many others.
"All his activities, either the plant distribution or books and magazines sold at a heavily discounted price, are nothing but an attempt to woo voters," he said.

"The collector had got similar complaints (against him) from different people last week. And therefore, she swung into action even before registering a formal complaint."

The former finance minister had planned to distribute 10,000 saplings in association with Thiruvananthapuram-based environmental activists. The LDF decided to dispatch them at the doorsteps of voters. “We have cancelled the planned programme," said T.K. Sujith, an Isaac campaigner. Mr Isaac's affidavit along with his nomination filed before the returning officer in Alappuzha on Tuesday shows he has Rs 5,000 in hand while he owns assets worth Rs 18.5 lakh.
