Thiruvananthapuram: Neyyatinkara-based Marayamuttom Service Cooperative Bank has started a company to market organic vegetables. It has been recently registered under the name Marayamuttom Farmers and Producers Company Limited. The company is also planning to open markets of organic vegetables at Marayamuttom and also near NIMS hospital, Neyyatinkara. Earlier, on November 28, 2016 organic vegetable farming was begun on the land owned by the bank at Chittatinkara near Marayamuttom with the assistance of Nabard.
The vegetables that were cultivated included lady’s finger, long beans, tomato, brinjal, eggplant and various chilly varieties, said Mr M.S. Anil, the president of the bank. The cultivation was inaugurated by Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunilkumar. Recently, outgoing KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran along with DCC president Neyyatinkara Sanal visited the farm under the bank.
He also visited the egg production unit and cattle farm of the bank. The bank had earlier initiated a project to produce at least one lakh eggs per day in the Panchayat. Only bio-manure like cow dung is being used on the land. Mr Anil said that the bank was also planning to extend vegetable farming to other premises owned by it and also to other public spaces which the panchayat handed over to the bank for cultivation.
