Bengaluru: Empty plot at Horamavu turns stinking dumpyard

Over a year ago, a compound wall was built around the plot, despite that garbage dumping continues and there are mounds of waste now.

Bengaluru: Nobody wants to live amidst garbage dumps. But the inmates of a house on 3rd Cross, 10th Main in Nandanam Colony, Horamavu have to bear with the ungainly sight of garbage at an empty plot right in front of their house. What is shocking is that the BBMP regularly picks up garbage and cleans the area, but not from this empty plot.

Over a year ago, a compound wall was built around the plot, despite that garbage dumping continues and there are mounds of waste now.

To make matters worse, some labourers who work in the vicinity have put up shacks inside the plot. Local residents say that they don’t dump garbage there, yet the place looks exactly like a garbage dump.

The compound has an opening which is used by the labourers staying in the shacks to get in and out. Right next to their shacks, one can find large piles of garbage.

Ms Prema, who lives next door, says, “Part of this plot has been turned into a garbage dump. We really don’t know who is dumping garbage here. Since the shacks have come up, the garbage problem has only become worse.”

Mr Biju, who runs a small grocery store on 10th Main, says the garbage is rarely cleared, though BBMP vans pass through the area. “Some people come on two-wheelers, throw the garbage into the empty plot and go away. Palike vans keep doing the rounds, but they never pick up garbage from this plot,” he says.

Horamavu corporator Radhamma Venkatesh says, “I have not heard of any garbage dumping at the spot. If it is true then I will visit and take appropriate action.”
