Kozhikode walks to conserve its heritage trails

Church-to-temple walk organised on World Heritage Week' covered important city monuments.

KOZHIKODE: A ‘Church to Temple’ walk was organized on Saturday morning in connection with the Heritage Conservation initiative of the district administration in association with the District Tourism Promotion Council, Kabani –the other direction, a non-profit organization working for sustainable tourism and SPACE ART, another initiative for travelers visiting the city and the general public. The walk was organised on the occasion of ‘World Heritage Week’ observation endorsed by UNESCO.

“This tale-telling stroll through the heritage of cosmopolitan Kozhikode narrated the history, legacy and values of this ancient yet vibrant port town”, said Sumesh Mangalassery of Kabani. “The walk covered the important monuments of the city starting from CSI cathedral, SBI Mananchira, Government model school, Town hall, Crown theatre, Comtrust, SM Street, Parsi temple, Chembotti Lane, Mariamman Kovil and finally ended at Thali”, he added.

City Police Commissioner S. Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar was chief guest at the programme. History and tales of the city were narrated by Vinod Krishnan, a heritage enthusiast and Abdulrahim, a merchant in SM street. Today’s walk was the third in the walking series. Kabani which has been involved with tourism related issues and research for the past one decade, is planning to conduct similar city trails for students, travelers and history enthusiasts to sensitize people on the history and values of Kozhikode- ‘the city of values’.
