JAC demands CM to drop Genco Nellore unit privatisation proposal

Nellore: TD Parliament segment general-secretary Chejerla Venkateswar Reddy questioned the rationale behind privatising Genco’s Damodaram Sanjeevaiah thermal power plant near Nellore under the pretext of high cost for power generation while continuing the Rayalaseema and Vijayawada Thermal power stations in the government sector.

Addressing the media after taking part in a programme organised by APGenco JAC and Genco Parirakshana Samiti at the CPM office here on Tuesday, Venkateswar Reddy alleged that Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy was trying to hand over the Genco unit at Nelaturu near Nellore to someone acquainted with him.

Reminding that coal has to be transported to Vijayawada and Rayalaseema thermal power plants from a long distance, he said coal is coming to Genco unit through a conveyor belt from the neighbouring Krishnapatnam port with least expenditure.

“If the government intends to save on power generation costs, they should hand over the plants which are spending more on power generation unlike the plant at Nelaturu,” Venkateswar Reddy assered.

He took a dig at the government for not reacting to the 28- day long agitation by the Genco workers at Nellore against its privatisation.

He demanded that the Chief Minister drop the privatisation proposal and make an announcement on the decision before coming to Nellore on October 27 to inaugurate the third unit of Genco.

CPM leaders M. Mohan Rao, K. Ajay Kumar, CPI leaders Dama Venkaiah and V. Ramaraju and JAC leaders were present.
