AP HC stays Gitam demolitions

Visakhapatnam: The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Sunday stayed the demolition drive taken up by Visakhapatnam revenue department at the Gitam campus and posted the case to November 30 for further hearing.
Counsel for GITAM deemed to be university submitted that the local authorities without serving any notice had entered the campus and demolished the compound wall. The revenue divisional officer (RDO) defended their action stating that they served notice five months ago.
Gitam counsel replied that the country was under lockdown for seven months and educational institutions were closed during that period. He said that the collector has announced that the Gitam Hospital was recognised as Covid treatment centre under AP Epidemic Diseases Regulation Covid) Act 2020. Gitam hostels were also identified to use as quarantine facilities. The Gitam hospital is even now treating Covid patients, counsel told the court.
He said the sudden demolition by district officials in the presence of the police created panic among the patients. After hearing the submissions, the High Court stayed the demolition and posted the hearing to November 30.
