Stormwater drains get yellow for identification

On a pilot basis in north Chennai, it has been decided to paint all the storm water collection points in yellow, the official added.

Chennai: Chennai corporation has begun painting stormwater drain (SWD) structures in yellow, so that the staff on flood mitigation work can easily identify, attend the clogged structures during heavy showers.

Pointing out that a recent high-level meeting held between the officials of Chennai corporation, Chennai metro water, PWD, state highways and TNEB discussed about the flood prone areas in Chennai and Kancheepuram, a corporation official said adding that the meeting also analysed the causes for stormwater drains choking during rains.

The meeting also discussed about the response time for draining the SWD structures and the percolation of floodwater in to the nearby rainwater harvesting structures. On a pilot basis in north Chennai, it has been decided to paint all the storm water collection points in yellow, the official added.

“Two years back, the state announced that it would establish more than 300 rain water harvesting wells along arterial roads located in low lying areas, but this project was shelved. Similarly, the metro water engineers should look out for the non functioning rain water harvesting structures in government and private buildings, so that the ground water is replenished during monsoon”, observed civic activist T. Solomon.
