New jetty for bigger ships at Vizhinjam

At present only small vessels can berth at Vizhinjam while the new jetty will berth inshore, fast patrol vessels.

Kochi: As part of augmenting its onshore and offshore capabilities to safeguard the coastal borders, Indian Coast Guard is constructing a jetty at Vizhinjam Harbour for berthing of bigger ships. Rajendra Singh, director general of the CG, laid its foundation stone during his maiden visit to Thiruvananthapuram. He also reviewed the infrastructure development and operational capabilities at the southernmost maritime domain of the country.

At present only small vessels can berth at Vizhinjam while the proposed 76.7-metre long and 8-metre wide jetty will berth inshore, fast patrol vessels. The coast guard authorities say the new dock will enhance its operational capabilities in the Southern peninsula. With the international transhipment terminal coming up at Vizhinjam, augmenting functional capacities in the strategically important port area assumes more significance. Construction of the new jetty will be executed through state harbour engineering department.
