Cauvery issue: Will DMK, VCK join hands?
Chennai: Finally VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan managed to build bridges with DMK as the Leader of Opposition MK Stalin acknowledged his wish for a co-ordinated effort on Cauvery issue.
“I understand your “feelings” and true situation. I thank you for welcoming the all-party meet. All should welcome your opinion that there is a need for a coordinated movement without being linked to electoral politics,” Mr Stalin in reply to Mr Thirumavalavan’s letter after presiding over an all-party meeting at the party headquarters Anna Arivalayam.
After consulting with MDMK chief Vaiko, CPI state secretary R. Mutharasan and CPI (M) state secretary G. Ramakrishnan on Monday, VCK leader said that though his party had taken efforts to convince its partners to attend the all-party meeting, it had decided to boycott to "avoid" unnecessary confusion ahead of the November 19 polls to three Assembly seats in the state. VCK’s executive committee on Monday decided to hold talks with other allies to reconsider the decision to boycott the DMK’s all party meet.
"VCK, which is part of the People’s Welfare Front, have to take a decision based on the majority opinion of the front. We are unable to attend the meet which comes closer to the elections to three constituencies," he said in a letter to “Thalapathi” Mr Stalin, minutes before the meet began in DMK headquarters. “It is the wish of VCK to take part in the meeting chaired by you,” he said.
Pointing to the participation of the leaders of Left parties in the consultative meet convened by Stalin with farmers associations on October 13, he said that on that basis, his party wanted other constituents in the PWF partners to participate in DMK's all-party meet. But the allies showed reluctance to attend the meet in wake of notification of polls as it may create confusion. Hence, we have decided to go by decision of the PWF,” Thirumavalavan said.
