Data analysis wing in all police units across Andhra Pradesh

Director General of Police N. Sambasiva Rao has secured approval from the Centre for the allotment of funds.

Nellore: Data analysis wings are being established at all 18 units of the Police Department across the state to ensure that technology is used effectively to speed up the investigation of cases. Such wings were introduced on an experimental basis in the districts of Kadapa and West Godavari, and their success has prompted the authorities to extend their establishment to all districts.

The estimated cost for the setup of a single Data Analysis Wing equipped with the latest technology is between Rs 1 crore and Rs 1.5 crore. Director General of Police N. Sambasiva Rao has secured approval from the Centre for the allotment of funds.

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), the premier R&D organization of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has been roped in to implement the programme in Andhra Pradesh. Some of the technology being procured is capable of extracting deleted information from computer systems and mobile phones.

Department heads will be asked to identify police constables, Sub-Inspectors and Circle Inspectors who are familiar with computer technology to undergo the advanced training. Subject experts from Mumbai and Delhi will train the selected personnel in the analysis of call data and various other aspects of digital forensics.

The police team from Kadapa, which has undergone training, has been able to investigate 27 cases of various nature purely through the use of technology within a period of 15 days. Noteworthy among the cases investigated by them is the abduction of a businessman. The victim was kidnapped at 11.30 am and retrieved by the police by 6 pm the same day based solely on information supplied by personnel from the data analysis wing.

The same team played a key role in cracking the kidnap of a minor girl by an autorickshaw driver in Bhattiprolu town of Guntur district. The team, along with the Guntur police, successfully rescued the girl and arrested the kidnapper in the Samba sector of Jammu & Kashmir in June this year.

Superintendent of the Nellore Police P.H.D. Ramakrishna, who was instrumental in the launching of wings at Kadapa and West Godavari before his being shifted to Nellore, said that he had secured permission from higher authorities for the introduction of a data analysis wing at Nellore immediately on a pilot basis. He said that it would take a few more months for the implementation of the state-wide programme.

A postgraduate in Computer Science from IIT Kharagpur, Mr Ramakrishna said they had shortlisted 10 police personnel from Nellore to undergo training in data analysis.
