Two-phase poll for local bodies on October 17 and 19
Chennai: The election to the civic bodies in Tamil Nadu, which will lead to indirect election of the mayors and other heads, will be held in two phases on October 17 and 19. A notification to this effect will be issued on Monday.
Chennai and Dindigul Corporations will go to the polls during the second phase. Announcing that the model code of conduct has come into force from Sunday, the State Election Commissioner P. Seetharaman informed that the filing of nominations would commence from September 26 and October 3 would be last date for receiving the papers which would be scrutinised on October 4 while the last date for withdrawal is October 6.
After the elections on October 17 and 19, the counting of votes would be taken up on October 21. The poll process is scheduled to be completed by October 24 and the first meeting of the newly elected bodies should be held on October 26.
The indirect elections to as many as 1,328 posts including mayors, deputy mayors, chairpersons, vice chairpersons in urban areas besides 13,362 posts including district panchayat presidents, vice presidents, panchayat union chairman, vice chairmen and heads of village panchayats in rural local bodies would be held on November 2.
“The Commission has relaxed the timing for filing of nominations which begins from 10 am and lasts till 5 pm and the deadline for withdrawal of papers will be 3 pm sharp. The polling will be held from 7 am till 5 pm,” Mr Seetharaman said.
