Nine bikes set on fire in Kannagi Nagar police station
Chennai: For the second time in a period of four days, vehicles parked in Kannagi Nagar police station were set on fire, early on Sunday morning. Police on Sunday night said they had arrested Kannagi Nagar resident ‘Tsunami’ Dinesh (21) in connection with the burning of parked bikes. He is a resident of Kannagi Nagar.
As many as 9 two-wheelers, including seized ones and those belonging to policemen, were damaged in the fire, which police personnel spotted around 3.30 am on Sunday. The station has been in the news for a custodial death of a 21-year-old on September 21 and also for giving hush money of Rs 2 lakh to the family of the victim. On Wednesday, after the news of the custodial death of ‘Meen’ Karthick broke, protesters had thrown bottles filled with petrol at a police jeep in Kannagi Nagar police station.
The City Police, in a press release on Sunday, said that fire and rescue team managed to bring the fire under control. They registered a case under IPC section 436 – committing mischief by fire or explosive substance intending to cause damage.
On Saturday, the family of the victim had caused a flutter at the city police commissionerate by returning the bribe that was thrust on them to keep the custodial death under wraps.
The family had brought Rs 2 lakh cash, which was said to be the first installment of Rs 4 lakh promised by a Kannagi Nagar police officer. They produced the money before the grievance officer who advised them to return the money to the cop who gave it to them.
Karthik and his friend Arun aka Arunachalam were picked up by the cops on charges of robbing a techie besides injuring her and hurting a grocer who tried to come to her rescue when she was walking home along Sakthi Srinivasan Salai, Mettukuppam, in Thoraipakkam last Sunday night. Cops claimed that Karthik swooned on Wednesday morning during interrogation and died.
Police on Sunday night said that they had arrested one ‘Tsunami’ Dinesh, 21, in connection with burning bikes parked in the Kannagi nagar police station. He is a resident of Kannagi Nagar.
