Hyderabad High Court questions monopoly on tax break

The bench directed the state governments to clarify whether the benefit of tax exemption was to go to the viewers or the producers.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday was surprised that producers were enjoying the benefit of entertainment tax exemption and not the viewers.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Thottathil Bhaskaran Nair Radhakrishnan and Justice V. Ramasubramanian was dealing with a PIL filed by advocate Adarsh Kumar, who had challenged the entertainment tax exemption granted to the Telugu film Gautamiputra Satakarni by the TS and AP governments.

The bench directed the state governments to clarify whether the benefit of tax exemption was to go to the viewers or the producers.

Mr P.V. Krishnaiah, counsel for the petitioner, said the tax exemption was granted for the benefit of the viewers but had gone to the film-maker in this case. The bench adjourned the case to August 16.
