Hyderabad High Court asks for info on undertrials
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday directed DGP, Prisons, to file the details of undertrial prisoners in jails and the number of undertrials who were unable to furnish the sureties despite bail granted by trial courts.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Thottathil Bhaskaran Nair Radhakrishnan and Justice V. Ramasubramanian while dealing with a PIL by one Dr K. Murali seeking to release of 180 undertrial prisoners who are languishing in jails.
Mr D. Suresh Kumar, counsel for the petitioner, told the court that the trial courts had granted bail to 180 undertrial prisoners and only 50 of them were released from the jails.
He said the remaining are still in prisons as they are not in a position to furnish the sureties.
He submitted that the Supreme Court had ordered the release of prisoners who are unable to furnish the sureties despite of bail. The bench directed the DG of Prisons to submit the details by July 27.
