Kerala: Medical college admissions in self financing colleges still uncertain

The counselling for the state quota can be done between August 8 and 19.

Thiruvananthapuram: Uncertainty still prevails over the admissions in self-financing medical colleges. As per the Medical Council of India decision, the admissions to management quota are also being done by the state government. The MCI has fixed August 30 as the deadline for completing the admissions based on the Supreme Court schedule. Hence, the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations has to complete all the admission formalities before that date. The counselling for the state quota can be done between August 8 and 19. This is the only allotment for self-financing medical colleges as they are not included in the first round. The first round held on July 16 was restricted to government medical colleges as the High Court verdict on the fees for self-financing medical colleges was delivered only on July 17.

The admissions to vacant seats after this round have to be done on the spot. Last year, there were complaints about irregularities by self-financing medical colleges during the spot admissions. The Admission Supervisory Committee had cancelled the admissions to all the 150 MBBS seats in Kannur Medical College and 30 seats in Karuna Medical college of Palakkad following irregularities. Though the colleges approached the court resulting in prolonged legal battles, the Supreme Court ratified the decision of the ASC.

Meanwhile, MES Medical College, Perinthalmanna, and Dr Somerwell Memorial CSI Medical College, Karakonam, have entered into an agreement with the government for continuing last year’s fee structure. As per this, students admitted to 20 per cent of the MBBS seats in government quota will have to pay only Rs 25,000 per annum. The fee for 30 per cent in government quota and in 35 per cent management quota will be Rs 2.5 lakh, and 15 per cent NRI quota Rs 15 lakh. For all other colleges, the fee for MBBS in 85 per cent seats will be Rs 5 lakh and 15 percent NRI quota Rs 20 lakh. For BDS, the fee in 85 percent seats will be Rs 2.9 lakh.
