CUK students' stir: HRD summons Vice-Chancellor Dr G Gopakumar

VC cancels scheduled meeting with striking students.

KASARGOD: In a hasty move, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry summoned Central University of Kerala (CUK) Vice-Chancellor Dr G. Gopakumar to New Delhi over the ongoing students protest demanding adequate hostel facilities. Following the communiqué from the ministry, the VC cancelled his scheduled meeting with the students on Monday and rushed to Delhi on Monday morning. It is to be recalled that the VC came back from Delhi on Saturday after meeting the HRD officials over the issue.

It is learnt that the ministry intervention came after Kasargod MP P. Karunakaran called the HRD secretary on Monday and demanded immediate action to sort out the ongoing ‘Student Refugee Movement’ protest by the students by occupying the college buildings and open spaces. The classes have been suspended in the varsity from July 19 onwards owing to the protest.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, the MP’s office confirmed that he had spoken to the secretary about the issue. CUK V.C. Dr G. Gopakumar was unavailable for comment. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, CUK Registrar Dr A. Radhakrishnan Nair said that the VC would meet the HRD minister on Wednesday. “Kasargod MP P Karunakaran has also strongly intervened in the issue and sent letter to the HRD minister even before the protest in order to enhance the hostel facilities in the campus,” he added.
