Thrissur: Two die as boat capsizes
Thrissur: Two fishermen died on Monday morning after a boat made of wood and fiber capsized off the coast of Azhikode estuary on Sunday at 6 a.m. Three fishermen were injured in the incident. The deceased are Angalassery Kuttan, 56, and Pandaraparambil Jaleel, 55. The injured Kandakathu Abdul Salam, Panikassery Sagheer, Kaithakka-parambil Abdul Rahiman are undergoing treatment at Taluk Hospital in Kodungallur.
The boats caught in strong waves turned upside down a few meters off the shore. Even though nearby boats and the boat from the Azhikode Coastal police station rushed to the sea, only three of the five men who fell into the sea could be rescued in time. Azhikode costal police station SI Sajil Sasi said that by 6.45 am the bodies were taken out of the sea and rushed to the taluk hospital.
The bodies of the deceased were kept for the public to pay their last respects at Munakkal in Azhikode and the funeral was held in the afternoon. Some of the fishermen have raised the issue of a lifesaving boat of Marine Enforcement being near the accident spot but not being rushed for the rescue operation. They said that this boat would have tided over the strong waves rather than the boat of the coastal police, but did not reach the spot in time.
This vessel was docked at Munambam when the accident occurred. Coastal police told DC that they swung into action soon after they were alerted while the boat of the Enforcement would have taken some time to reach the spot as it was a comparatively big vessel. There were also allegations that the Marine Enforcement was not alerted soon after the incident.
