Telangana High Court takes up delay in crop loss relief

The bench directed the principal secretary to appear before it to explain the reasons for the inordinate delay in sanctioning the input subsidy.

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Tuesday summoned the principal secretary and director of agriculture to appear in person on July 1 and explain why 28,000 farmers from Adilabad had not been paid input subsidy towards crop loss in 2018.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan and Justice Shameem Akther was dealing with a petition by one Kallem Karunakar Reddy.

He said about Rs 12 crore was to be paid to the farmers under the input subsidy scheme as the crop was damaged due to unprecedented rain.

Mr Sharat, special counsel, speaking for the state government, said the principal secretary and Director of the agriculture department had sought two months to sanction the money.

Chief Justice Chauhan observed that when the input subsidy scheme was adopted by the state government, it was the department’s duty to sanction the money on time. The bench directed the principal secretary to appear before it to explain the reasons for the inordinate delay in sanctioning the input subsidy.
