Chennai: Cop asks tipplers to leave school ground, gets killed

According to the police, Mohanraj, on the way to his residence would have noticed the group of tipplers creating nuisance in the school ground.

Chennai: A 39-year-old grade-1 constable, who had joined the Sunguvar Chatram police station only three days ago, was murdered on the outskirts of the city on Sunday night, while he was returning home after duty.

The deceased constable P. Mohanraj (39) of Poigai Nallur in Vellore district was transferred from Vandalur Otteri police station to Sunguvar Chatram police station last week after the completion of five years in the station.

According to police norms, no police constable could work more than five years in the same police station. He joined duty in Sunguvar Chatram police station on Friday.

Only on his third day in the new police station, on Sunday night, Mohanraj was returning home on his two-wheeler en route Thirumangalam Kandigai village near Sunguvar Chatram.

Next morning, some passers-by noticed a two-wheeler abandoned near a private school in the village and found Mohanraj’s body. They informed Sunguvar Chatram police station and the police rushed to spot and identified the deceased person as their colleague.

Immediately the local police alerted DIG Thenmozhi and Kancheepuram SP Santosh Hathimani and they rushed to the spot to conduct a preliminary investigation.

According to the police, Mohanraj, on the way to his residence would have noticed the group of tipplers creating nuisance in the school ground. “He stopped his bike and went to the ground and asked them to leave the spot. As Mohanraj was wearing a civil shirt, except for his police shoe and pant, the tipplers would have attacked him with liquor bottle and stones. There is evidence that transpires that the gang would have chased him to the road and again attacked to death,” police said.

They also had thrown a boulder on his head and there were bloodstains near the steps of the school and on road. However, the police are yet to ascertain the identity of the murderers. The Sunguvar Chatram police have registered a case and are investigating. Meanwhile, the district police have formed a special team comprising three DSPs and seven inspectors to nab the murderers.

Mohanraj is survived by wife Anburoja, son Abinesh (16), daughters Abinaya (14) and Agalya (10).
