More youth join up to spread Id cheer

Groups pool cash, buy clothes, books for kids in orphanages.

Hyderabad: Id-ul-Fitr, which falls on Monday this year, has seeing a lot of youngsters opting for philanthropic acts like buying clothes for children in orphanages, buying school books and stationery and paying their school fees. For many students, this is just the beginning of the academic year. Mr Mir Alam Khan, a youngster working with a software company, said, “This year my friends and I have decided to buy new clothes as gift for Id for children orphanages. This thought came from a post that was circulating in social media about children who do not have proper clothes. We decided to pool money and buying it for them in advance.”

Large families have come together this year and contributed to help those who need education for their children. Ms Saleema Begum, a bank employee, said, “Usually we spend our money on clothes or buying things of our choice. But this year, there was a unanimous feeling that it must be used for a charitable act. With Id-ul-Fitr coinciding with school reopening it has come as a good choice.” While the celebrations with family and friends continues, many of them have taken this huge weekend as an option to have family get-togethers.

Many large families have decided to meet at resorts so that it becomes a get-together and also rewinding of sorts. Mr Abdula Abedi, a lawyer, explained, “We have decided to spend the day outside with family as most of us have been travelling during the full year.” Id-ul-Fitr which is a celebration with friends, family and neighbours has taken different meaning over the years as people opt to spend their Idi for social causes. Many of them who come home from overseas destinations like the Middle East prefer to have large get-togethers as they can catch up with all family members under one roof.
