Four in custody over Edayar gold heist
Kochi: The Ernakulam Rural Police, probing the heist of 20 kg gold worth around Rs 6 crore by two bike-borne assailants from a car while transporting it to a refinery plant at Edayar two weeks ago, is learned to have taken into custody four suspects.
According to police sources, they were being interrogated and arrests were yet to be recorded. The Special Investigation Team had arrested one Bibin George from Thodupuzha in connection with the case on Thursday and was remanded to judicial custody on Friday.
The four persons is learnt to have been arrested from near Munnar on Friday night and brought to Aluva on the same night. Sources said that a former driver of CGR Metalloys Private Limited, a gold refining firm had reportedly plotted the heist and was also among the suspects in custody.
It had initially suspected the involvement of a two-member gang behind the heist. But now it has emerged that the remaining two were waiting inside a car parked near the spot. The robbery had taken place in front of CGR Metalloys Private Limited on May 9. Police had also come across CCTV footage of two motorcycle-bound men fleeing from the spot.
However, police has not commented on the latest development and is still unclear that whether they were able to recover the stolen gold.
Meanwhile, The police is set to file a custody application for the arrested accused for collecting further evidence. It is learnt that Cyber Cell had played a crucial role in tracing the accused after checking the CCTV footage and mobile phone call records and tower locations.
