White topping work throws traffic out of gear

Motorists commuting on Hosur-Madiwala road, Bannerghatta Road and Adugogi Road had a harrowing time as traffic was moving at a snail’s pace.

Bengaluru: The ongoing white topping work between St John’s hospital and Madiwala Road is leading to numerous traffic gridlocks in the southern part of the city.

Motorists were caught off guard as the white topping work was taken up on Wednesday without providing alternate route, nor were there enough policemen to regulate the traffic.

The chaos was so severe that its effect was felt right up to Lalbagh. Even the road in front of Forum Mall (Adugodi road), Madiwala Road, Bannerghatta Road and Hosur road witnessed traffic jams.

Motorists commuting on Hosur-Madiwala road, Bannerghatta Road and Adugogi Road had a harrowing time as traffic was moving at a snail’s pace. To add to the chaos buses were allowed into use the bylanes.

Sri Ram, a resident of J.P. Nagar said that it was worst Wednesday as it took more than one hour just to commute three kilometers from Adugodi Circle to Koramangala due to the white topping work. This is a classic example of poor coordination between BBMP and traffic cops, he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police K.V. Jagadeesh (Traffic East) told Deccan Chronicle that white topping was taken up by the BBMP contractor and the police department is pressuring him to expedite the work at the earliest.

It is expected that similar traffic situation would prevail for the next 20 days. There is also limited scope for diverting vehicles as there are no alternatives available.

However, the police department is in touch with the BBMP to regulate the traffic and complete the work at the earliest.

White topping is necessary and it cannot be stopped considering the density of vehicles it carries. Having white topped roads prevents frequent occurrence of potholes, a senior police officer said.
