Chennai: Breakthrough in kidney replacement process

Almost 2.5 lakh people die of kidney failure in India every year.

Chennai: Lack of awareness, unavailability of organs for transplant and most importantly, expensive treatment, are a few factors responsible for the very high incidence of kidney failure that is seen worldwide, which continues to be growing at an alarming rate.

With dialysis being the most commonly known form of treatment – and the baggage of problems it carries with it, the need for research and a more efficient and simpler form of treatment was found essential.

“Almost 2.5 lakh people die of kidney failure in India every year. The common man may not be aware of the numbers due to no direct link with the disease.
Co-inventor of the implantable artificial kidney, Dr Roy, who is an engineer, enlightened those present about his kidney project, which served as a ray of light in the extremely dark tunnel of lost hope. Explaining the benefits of the device, he said, “It requires to be inserted into the body of the patient. It provides continuous treatment, eliminates the buildup of toxins and allows the individual the freedom of mobility. The patient’s risk of infection and thrombosis is also reduced.” Tamil Nadu Kidney Research (TANKER) foundation awarded many achievers during the conference.
