Nizamia Hospital ails as officials neglect upkeep

The hospital, which has 180 beds, treats around 500 outpatients each day

Hyderabad: The Government Nizamia General hospital, popularly known as Charminar Unani Hospital, one of the most popular hospitals built by the Nizam of Hyderabad, is in a dilapidated condition due to the utter neglect of the structure by the officials concerned.

The hospital, which has 180 beds, treats around 500 outpatients each day. This premises also house the Unani Medical College. However, the heritage structure has been badly neglected by the government. Its roof is leaking, walls are moist, doors are broken and there are no proper toilets. Patients, staff and students say they are facing a lot of hardship due to this. Mortar chunks falling down each day is a common site for people who are working here. The structure needs urgent renovation, say the employees.

Abdul Khadir, a final year student in the medical college, said, “The whole premises are shabby. In ward numbers 1 and 3 washrooms are the worst, no patient or attendant can use them. The other toilets doors are broken and there is leakage from the drains. Patients, who belong to poor families, come here for treatment and are facing difficulties.” “Authorities higher levels are least bothered to address the issue. Patients and medical students are at the receiving end,” he added.

Dr Kavitha Nirugonda, superintendent, Nizamia Hospital, said, “The roof is leaking during the rains and the walls are getting moist. This hospital needs renovation. This heritage structure is also serving as a hospital for thousands of people.” “As of now, there are insufficient cleaning staff members in this hospital, but still they are doing their best to clean each and every corner of this premises,” she added.
