Shamna death: Father petitions apex medical board
Kochi: K A Abootty, father of medico Shamna Tasnim on Monday, filed a petition before the state apex medical board on Thursday citing the disrespect shown to his daughter at the Ernakulam Government Medical College (EMC) even after identifying that she was dead. In the petition, he said that his daughter was removed under the leadership of the EMC top brass to a private hospital with lesser facilities even after confirming that she was dead at 3.45 pm. A doctor who had worked in EMC and now works at the private hospital visited EMC prior to taking Shamna to the hospital, he said.
The private hospital in its turn charged '8986 for the treatment of an already dead daughter. Shamna who was brought dead at 6.30 pm on July 18 was declared dead by the hospital authorities at 8.29 pm, he added. “The consultation record after two minutes of admission into the private hospital showed that there was no sustained central pulse/cardiac activity. But still CPR and adrenaline injection were given,” he said.
He said that the departmental inquiry conducted by the joint director of medical education had pinpointed medical negligence in the case. He said Shamna was shifted to the private hospital by keeping the parents in the dark. Meanwhile Dr. Jilse George, head of the Medicine Department at the EMC, who was placed on suspension as part of the inquiry into the medico’s death was reinstated on Thursday. DME Dr Remla Beevi said that he was allowed to rejoin duty by the Government pending a detailed inquiry. It is learnt that the meeting of the apex medical board consisting of DHS, DME, Director General of Prosecution and Additional DHS Vigilance was incnclusive on Thursday. The board is expected to summon some for detailed examination in the following sittings.
