Fund crunch hits Asha Bhavan
KOZHIKODE: Government Asha Bhavan for Women at Mayanadu in City is facing a huge financial crisis as the Social Justice department has yet to sanction funds. A total of 25 inmates, who have been cured of their mental disorders, are staying at Asha Bhavan under the project Psycho Social Care Home Project. Although the District Administration has sent letters requesting that funds be sanctioned, so far no steps have been taken by the social justice department.
Though the department sanctioned Rs 13.14 lakh in 2014-15 for the functioning of the project, a balance of Rs 2.22 lakh is still pending. Moreover, the funds for 2015-16 and 2016-17 have not been sanctioned. In a letter sent earlier this month by the Kozhikode District Collector to the Social Justice Department secretary, he mentioned that the project was facing trouble because of the acute shortage of food, medicines, clothes etc for the inmates and the functioning itself was in jeopardy.
“Although we have sent applications for funds on time, no aid has been sanctioned. At present, the inmates are living with the generous support of NGOs and contributions from kindhearted people,” said District Collector N Prasanth. Due to the pending bills of previous months, Triveni store has stopped supplying food items to the inmates. The honorarium for Asha Bhavan workers has also been delayed.
