Final-year MBBS student found dead in Thrissur
Thrissur: An MBBS final year student was found hanging in his hostel room on Thursday morning. The deceased is Amarjith,23, a resident of Kannur A K Nivaz at Mambaram near Pinarayi. Medical College Police told DC that issues related to academics may have led to him taking the extreme step. His friends and hostel-mates broke the door to his room at around 11 a.m. as he was not responding to their calls. Amarjith is the son of a top CPI leader in Kannur district and is a dalit. Even though there are allegations from some quarters about a possible dalit torture leading to suicide, police said that they had not yet received any such complaints.
MCH principal K.J. Ajayakumar, who was on an official trip to Thiruvananthapuram, said that he would make an official statement after reaching the MCH early morning today. He, however, ruled out possibilities of Dalit torture. “The question of Dalit torture or discrimination does not arise in this case,” he said. However, Amarjith’s relatives who reached the MCH late on Thursday, talked to students and professors to find out if he had to face any such discrimination.
Amarjith’s friend and house surgeon at the hospital, Joy S George, has given a statement to MCH police of a possible poor show in academics leading to the suicide. He has also told police that for the last two to three days, the deceased was upset over certain issues. Final year MBBS student Bebeto T, who knew Amarjith in the hostel, said that the deceased was always in a jovial mood and hence they were shocked to hear the news of him committing suicide in the hostel.
