Chennai: After running a multi specialty hospital in Manali for close to a decade, a quack couple was arrested by the police on Tuesday after officials of health department sealed the hospital.
The couple, Sundaramoorthy and Rukmani, are B.Pharm graduates, but practised medicine and ran Sornam multi speciality on Kamarajar Salai in Manali.
The hospital even has a dedicated website which claims that they have received three awards.
The hospital came under scanner after a 50-year-old woman died without responding to treatment at the hospital on September 3 this year. Selvi of Chinna Sekkadu near Manali was admitted with fever.
Following her death, her husband Pandian filed a police complaint against hospital and the doctors alleging medical negligence. In his complaint, he had stated that his wife was normal when admitted to the hospital and the doctor referred her for further treatment to government hospital only after her condition worsened.
Pandian didn’t stop there. He filed a complaint with the joint director of medical services in Tiruvallur and sought their intervention. A team of officials had conducted surprise checks at the hospital along with police personnel and found that the couple who ran the hospital were only B.Pharm graduates.
But, they had obtained proper licence to run a hospital, police sources said.On Tuesday, all in-patients were vacated and the hospital was sealed. The quack couple were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
