Tamil Nadu parties silent over Cauvery row
Chennai: A day after Karnataka Assembly resolution ignoring the Supreme Court order to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu, most of the state leaders chose to be silent as Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa is undergoing medical treatment, even while the state’s legal team is preparing for the next hearing on September 27.
CPI state unit and Tamil Maanila Congress asked the centre to take action on Karnataka state government for violating the apex court judgment. Most of the state leaders had foreseen Karnataka’s move and reacted early, but after Karnataka’s resolution, there were no appeals or demands to Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa who is undergoing treatment in Apollo Hospital.
Besides, the leaders are apparently watching the legal steps of Tamil Nadu government after reports of Tamil Nadu advocate general R. Muthukumaraswamy with the Chief Minister.
The next hearing on the Cauvery dispute is slated for September 27 when the non-compliance of Karnataka government with the court order would be dealt by the apex court judges themselves. However, there were appeals to the Centre government with the CPI and TMC asking the centre to direct Karnataka to follow the SC order or take action on it CPI state secretary R. Mutharasan said Karnataka had created a wrong precedent by violating the apex court judgment.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddharamaiah had given a false statement that Tamil Nadu had completed kuruvai crops and seeking water for samba, he noted and added that it was intended to provoke the people of Karnataka and reap political gains. Centre has the responsibility to check Karnataka’s violation of rule of law, the CPI leader said and sought the immediate formation of the Cauvery Management Board.
Tamil Maanila Congress leader G.K. Vasan took exception to Siddharamaiah’s remarks that Tamil Nadu farmers had completed kuruvai crops and seeking water for samba and said Karnataka government is not respecting the SC verdict.
Karnataka leaders speaking against the formation of the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Regulation Committee is contempt of court, he said. The Centre should direct Karnataka to act within the Constitution and release water for TN.
