River Godavari in spate, three washed away in Nizamabad

The district administration has sounded high alert along the banks of rivers in the district.

Nizamabad: River Godavari and its tributary Manjeera are in spate in Nizamabad district due to heavy downpour in catchment areas.

The district administration has sounded high alert along the banks of rivers in the district. Rivulets and streams are flowing at high level across the district. Three persons including a two-year- old boy were washed away in flood waters and around 1,100 houses were damaged.

The deceased were identified Ambekar Priyanka, 26, and her two-year-old son, Harshit of Padigal village in Velpur mandal and Akki Narsavva, 70, of Krishnajiwadi village in Tadwai mandal. Rehabilitation centres were set up at Hasgul, Sirisamunder, Pedda Takkadpally villages in Bichkunda mandal and Kaligot of Jakranpally mandal for displaced people.

Water tanks were breached in several areas and roads were badly damaged by flood. Transportation between Bodhan-Banswada, Banswada-Bichkunda, Sanga-reddy-Nanded and Tadbiloli-Renjal was affected. Police diverted vehicular traffic to alternative routes as bridges and roads were severely damaged. Two NDRF teams have been deployed at Bodhan, should any emergency situation arise with flood.

Nizamsagar project also received heavy inflows from upstream areas. Haldi-nala and Pocharam reservoir water reached the project and it would be filled by next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, collector Dr Yogita Rana and joint collector, A. Ravinder Reddy visited Bodhan municipality, Hangarga village in Bodhan mandal and Navipet to monitor the flood situation.

The collector said that rehabilitation arrangements have been made and schools in dilapidated conditions will be shifted to nearby residential schools.
She said that losses due to incessant rains will be assessed immediately for suitable compensation.
