Lift new curbs on scribes, demand CPM members

The Chief Minister is proudly declaring in the Assembly that the state has become an heaven of peace.

Chennai: CPI (M) on Wednesday demanded lifting of the new restrictions imposed on journalists in the Assembly immediately to ensure free functioning of the media.

In a resolution adopted at the CPI (M)’s secretariat meeting here, the party said new restrictions were being imposed on reporters to even enter the Assembly hall. “Journalists are facing difficulties in entering and leaving the Assembly hall,” it said, pointing to the restrictions imposed on the journalists in gate number four of the Assembly where leaders usually interacts with the media.

“The Chief Minister is proudly declaring in the Assembly that the state has become an heaven of peace. But unnecessary restrictions are being imposed in the Assembly complex. It is totally unacceptable that the government which should support the smoothing functioning of the journalists acting otherwise.

Hence we demand lifting of the new restrictions imposed on the journalists,” the resolution demanded.

Marxist party also urged the state election commission to ensure free and fair conduct of the local body polls after declaring reserved seats on the basis of rotational basis as per the 2011 census. It also said that though 50 per cent reservation of seats was announced for the women, the details of seats reserved for women were yet to be declared.
