KURNOOL: Communist Party of India (CPI) organised a protest in Yemmiganuru town on Monday highlighting various long-pending issues affecting the region. During the demonstration, the party leaders sought public support by collecting signatures to press for their demands.
Among the prominent concerns raised by the CPI leaders was the long-delayed construction of the right canal of the Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme (RDS). They emphasized that this unresolved issue has been causing significant hardship to around 40,000 farmers in the area for the past decade. The completion of the canal is essential to curtail labor migration and stabilize the agricultural lands, yet successive governments have failed to address the matter effectively.
Furthermore, the CPI leaders pointed out that an allocation of ₹1,985 crore was previously sanctioned for the canal project, which was entrusted to the Nagarjuna Constructions Company. However, despite spending approximately ₹13 crore on the project, pending bills have not been cleared, and the necessary funds to continue the work have not been provided, resulting in further delays.
In addition to the canal issue, the CPI leaders also demanded the construction of a railway line connecting Yemmiganuru to Kurnool. They stressed that such a railway line would not only improve transportation convenience but also facilitate the smooth movement of local agricultural produce, thus benefiting the entire region.
The leaders highlighted the plight of local weavers, who are facing challenges due to the lack of employment opportunities and a viable market. To address this, they urged the government to establish a textile park in the region. Such a park would prove beneficial for local weavers and cotton farmers, providing them with employment opportunities and access to a better market. Party leaders Nageswara Rao, Mallikarjunudu, Ranganna and others were present.
